At 247 Property Services, we’ve seen almost everything in property management — from leaky taps that turn into indoor waterfalls to pets that somehow grow larger than promised! But every so often, a story comes along that makes us smile, and reminds us why good communication between landlords, tenants and agents is so important.
One of our tenants recently rang us in a mild panic. The landlord had visited the property for a routine inspection and noticed the back garden was starting to resemble a jungle. The grass was so high that even the neighbour’s cat had stopped venturing in!
The landlord, quite rightly, reminded the tenant that lawn care was part of their tenancy agreement. The tenant, on the other hand, explained that the garden mower had mysteriously “given up the ghost” halfway through its job. According to them, it had “retired early and gone to mower heaven.”
To make matters more amusing, the tenant admitted they had tried cutting the grass with… a pair of kitchen scissors! Their determination was admirable, but the result looked more like patchy haircuts than a well-kept lawn.
The landlord, although initially frustrated, couldn’t help but laugh when shown a photo of the scissors propped up on the patio chair like a soldier who’d fought bravely and lost.
Instead of letting the issue escalate, we stepped in as mediators. The landlord agreed to replace the mower — a small investment to ensure the property was cared for properly — while the tenant promised to keep the garden trim going forward (with proper equipment this time!).
Within a week, the garden was restored to its former glory. The neighbours stopped joking about needing a machete, the landlord was pleased with the upkeep, and the tenant was rather proud of their “lawn-master” skills.
This little story is a perfect example of how landlord-tenant issues don’t need to end in conflict. With a touch of humour, open communication, and our team acting as the bridge, what began as a small dispute ended with both parties happy.
At 247 Property Services, we believe in exactly that — great tenants in great homes, with landlords who can rest assured their properties are being cared for.
